Oak (Quercus species)

Who does not know the oak tree? Few in the northern hemisphere in any case. Since ancient times the oak was used as the wood of choice for shipbuilding and framing houses. It has been considered sacred among many cultures; both Zeus and Thor were associated with the oak. Farther west, the California Indians also held the oak in high regard.

Much further back, since prehistory and up to the present day, the genus of oak trees (Quercus sp.) has provided haven and lodging for a great plethora of wildlife. From squirrels and bats to moths, beetles and bees, the oak tree serves as a home, and food source. From above birds alight, and beneath the soil fungi course. All are party to the great dance of life around this magnificent tree form we all know as the mighty oak.
